In sundry ways, Alice in Chains was the conclusive heavy metal band of the soon '90s. Drawing equally from the heavy riffing of post-Van Halen metal and the desponding strains of post-punk, the tie developed a bleak, nihilistic sound that balanced grinding acid rock with subtly textured acoustic verse. They were hard enough for metal fans, besides their dark subject matter and punky have at placed them among the front ranks of the Seattle-based grunge bands. While this dichotomy helped the arrange soar to multi-platinum status by their second album, 1992's Dirt, it in addition divided them. Guitarist Jerry Cantrell perpetually leaned toward the mainstream, while cantatrice Layne Staley was fascinated with the seamy subterraneous. Such tension drove the band about stardom in their early years, limit following Dirt, Alice in Chains suffered from close-crippling internal tensions that kept the junto off the road for the remains of the '90s and, consequently, the clump never quite fulfilled their potential.
